"7000 signatures to save our NHS" – Open Letter to Sarah Newton, Truro and Falmouth MP

A couple of weeks ago, you might have seen two men being
-
NHS Cuts Protest in Truro
attacked on Lemon Quay, Truro. Surrounded
by almost a dozen assailants and bundled to the floor, a growing crowd gathered
to watch Nick Clegg and David Cameron be assaulted – but no one came to their
aid. Fortunately for the reputation of
our town, the PM and Deputy PM were not really embattled just outside HMV –
this was a role play, part of a wider protest against the NHS cuts that are
affecting Royal Cornwall Hospital, Treliske.
From Chris McArthur –
Open Letter
The protest was about two things. 400 jobs are being cut at Treliske
Hospital, half of them front line medical posts. Medical operations are being rationed and
patients given much longer waiting times, like cataracts, gallstones, joint
operations etc. Morale is very low at
the Hospital and the Rally outside the hospital was to show staff we care about
what is happening to them. The
Coalition promised there would be no cuts in NHS services but the cuts are
huge.
From Treliske to
Lemon Quay
Also Cornwall Anti Cuts Alliance has been campaigning with
Save Our NHS Cornwall against the government's plans to privatise Primary Care
Trusts. Over 7,000 signatures have been
collected and the national groundswell has forced the Coalition to halt in its
tracks. 60 people marched from Treliske
to Lemon Quay , not a lot you might say, but the resistance to the Coalition
has started. We were treated to some
street theatre when we got to Leon Quay, it makes a break for too many
speeches, although the two speeches we
got were great from Howard Newlove and Em Middlemiss.
Camerona & Clegg 'Attacked'
in Truro
The crowd was delighted to see actors playing Cameron and Clegg get some of their own
medicine when they were rounded up and put in shackles by Unison and other
public sector workers. There is no
compelling financial reason to be having cuts at all. It's just the Tories want a smaller state
with the poor going under to boost profits for the rich. There is so much tax evasion, it would easily
reduce the defecit if the Tories collected it from their rich friends. Next we are presenting a huge petition with
270,000 people from all across the country to all Cornwall's MPs. Sarah Newton gets her visit on Saturday May
28 gathering outside Wetherspoons at midday.
Since this letter was received,
Sarah Newton has stated that she does not intend to meet with the
protestors. Read her press release here
and the response of the Cornwall Anti Cuts Alliance here. Which do you agree with?

I got caught up in the protest quite by accident. It was quite fun!

ReportSeems a bit fishy, her not being there on the date of the protest/proposed meeting.

ReportPS Surely members of the public reighning Cameron in and tying him up would have done wonders for Truro's reputation!
