A new generation of gymnasts inspired by Britain's Olympic medal heroes will now have the chance to improve their skills following the opening of a new Academy in Cornwall.

The £200,000 Aspire Gymnastics Academy in Bucklers Lane, St Austell launched with a series of acrobatic demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday (January 5 and 6)

Over 150 budding Louis Smith's and Beth Tweddle's had already registered to join the gymnasium, which will eventually have capacity for over 500 members, before its official opening.

Coaching director, Mhairi Whyte, said: "It's brilliant to have opened the doors to our new and long awaited gymnasium in St Austell.

"The open days were incredible and it was great to see so many people coming through the doors to find out more.

"The 2012 London Olympics created a real interest in the sport, both from boys and girls, especially with the medal success of Beth Tweddle, Louis Smith and the men's team.

"Gymnasts of all ages in the St Austell area and beyond now have a top class facility where they can develop their skills and confidence, whether they want to do it just for fun or for competition."

Launched in 2009 by Mhairi Whyte at the Bernard Sunley Gymnasium in Truro, Aspire already trains over 500 members ranging from eight weeks old 'Baby Gym' members through to adults under the British Gymnastics approved structure.

There is also potential for the new gymnasium in St Austell, which has been fitted with a £18,000 sprung floor, to host workshops for schools in the local area.

Mhairi added: "We've been speaking to a number of schools in the area and they are really impressed with our facilities.

"It is great that young people in St Austell will now have the chance, through a series of workshops, to try out new equipment and a sport that they may otherwise have missed."
