Mr PE Thomas
THE FUNERAL service has taken place at the Kernow Chapel, Penmount, Truro, of Mr Philip Ernan Thomas of Camborne, formerly of St Ives, who has died at Treliske Hospital, Truro at the age of 59.
The service was conducted by Pastor Mike Ely.
Phil was born in the village of Halsetown, near St Ives, where he grew up with his brother Peter, sister Vivienne, and cousins Sandra, Pidge, Tim and William. They all attended the local school.
Phil passed his 11-plus and attended the Humphry Davy Grammar School, graduating from there to Plymouth Polytechnic College, where he studied electronics.
Phil joined the Merchant Navy and travelled the world working on oil tankers as a first radio officer for BP and The Bibby Company.
Eventually he tired of travelling and being away for long periods so transferred to the Sea Link cross-Channel ferries and was then based in Portsmouth.
Phil bought a house in Camborne near to where his parents and sister lived.
In the 1980s Phil left the Navy and opened a video shop in St Ives, where he remained in business for more than 20 years, finally retiring in 2006.
Phil was not that involved in an active social life but had spent a lot of time with special friends Martin and Karen and took an interest in the children and watched them grow up.
Phil was an extended part of the family until they moved away a few months ago.
He had suffered kidney problems two years ago but had made a good recovery from this.
