Truro Retail Gloom on New Bridge Street as Another Shop Closes

Although Truro was once ranked as the second strongest town in the south west in terms of retail space, a recent downward trend saw the third New Bridge Street business fold in as many months. But according to Millers estate agents, the gloomy street may soon be seeing some new life.

Shops quickly changing hands on New Bridge Street, Truro
Closed Truro Shops
Check out our gallery for some images of the now closed-down outlets, ranging from upper-market art at Driftwood Gallery (their original exhibitions will be missed!), to affordable jewellery in Shimmer and unique trinkets from Angels Wings. Just round the corner, The Red Elephant Bead Shop has folded as well.
Although each seems to have had a loyal base of customers, the mix of high rent and reduced consumer spending seems to have taken its toll on these small independent businesses.
In fact, the whole area has seen upheaval of late. Quay 4 clothing made way for Tr Run, while Tilly Mint Bakery upped sticks from next to the bus station and opened the (very delicious) La Creperie a few streets over.
Good News from Miller
Catching our tweet about the closing shops, Miller Commercial responded with some good news. New Bridge Street has a bright future, after all.
- Truropeople: Things are looking gloomy on New Bridge Street. 3 Shops closed in quick succession; Shimmer, Driftwood Gallery & Angels Wings #sad
- MillerComProp: new business opening at former Shimmer shop next week & Angel Wings under offer #notsobadafterall
- @TasteBudsCafe1: I am just about to sign on the premises that was Shimmer, just need the others occupied now J
And what of Driftwood Gallery?
- MillerComProp: Truro & Falmouth remain popular retail spots. Don't know re Driftwood. Not our client or it would be sold by now!
Have your say.
Do you think New Bridge Street's fortunes will turn? Why do you think so many shops have closed in such a small area? Is there anything that can be done about it?
