Care specialists Regard are meeting the needs of young adults throughout the South West with autism, moderate to severe learning disabilities and complex needs, at their recently re-launched service in Torquay.

Harbour is aimed at people with high dependency needs who are ready to make the transition from residential schools, colleges, or family home and live more independently, whilst still requiring round-the-clock care.

Customer service manager Yvonne Bray said: "Harbour is all about providing more independent living for individuals who still require a high level of support.

"Our aim is to enable our residents - all of whom will have complex needs - to achieve their highest level of independence.  We're delighted to be able to provide a welcoming home for young people who are ready to live more independently.

"Harbour will provide people with the opportunity to progress to their potential in their own time.  We understand how important it is for them to exercise independence, while still being able to rely on our support and availability."

Each resident will have a personalised support plan, with long-term targets broken down into small, achievable goals.

Yvonne said: "Our goal is to support them to live as meaningful and full a life as possible and to reach their own potential.  We'll also look for opportunities for them to take part in local social and recreational activities, seek voluntary work where appropriate and be integrated into the local community."

Set in attractive gardens in a residential area on the outskirts of the town, Harbour is a large Victorian house, offering flexible accommodation which can be decorated to meet individual tastes, choices and sensory needs.

It includes two self-contained studios, three en-suite bedrooms and a bedroom with adjacent private bathroom.  The communal areas include a kitchen, a large dining room, living room and gardens, which can be used for recreational and leisure pursuits as well as for gardening opportunities.

It is also proposed that a separately-accessed building in the grounds of the house will be transformed to provide individual supported-living flats for the same client group, with tenants being able to access 24/7 support and care as appropriate and necessary.  The first of these flats has already been completed.

Harbour is registered to provide services for younger adults with autistic spectrum conditions, challenging behaviours, profound or multiple learning disabilities and significant communication difficulties.
