A Cornish dental practice is providing a new free service to help people improve their oral health and hygiene.
Katy Parsonage – Dental Nurse at Lander Dental Group
At Lander Dental Group, dental nurse – Katy Parsonage - is helping patients to adopt better oral health, receiving referrals of adults and children from the Dentists for education and prevention, which she feels is especially important as this is no longer addressed in schools.
"Many people can remember being briefly taught about oral health in school, with the little pink tablet helping children to see where they might be missing brushing. But this is no longer common practice. Most people simply aren't shown how to brush their teeth and look after their gums properly. Children were first to use our new service, as motivating them to clean properly is a common problem, but it's now open for all ages."
Initially parents who were struggling to motivate their child to adopt good oral health were making appointments for their child to see Katy, alongside Lander Dental Group's dentists suggesting it might be beneficial for a particular child at their regular check-up. But now a higher number of adults are making an appointment.
"Now adults are starting to make appointments as they want to look at a more holistic approach to oral health. We discuss diet, whether they should be using fluoride, how fixed braces can increase the risk of fillings and gingivitis, gum disease and how to combat such issues. I'm looking forward to educating patients on what to do at home and putting some simple changes in place. It's gratifying to see the effect when my advice is put into practice."
Katy has been a dental nurse with Lander Dental Group for over three years, managing radiography and assisting with oral surgery and implants.
Co-Partner of Lander Dental Group, Mark Pimble is pleased to have such a motivated team:
"Katy approached us about providing an education and prevention service, in addition to her current responsibilities as a dental nurse and manager of radiography within our practice. We are delighted that the service is proving to be so popular, especially as dental health is no longer addressed through the school system. Katy has a real talent for motivating children using toothbrush charts and certificates, whilst adult patients want to be more informed."
Lander Dental Group's new oral health service looks at education, motivation, a bespoke plan for each patient and regular reviews.
The scheme is available to current patients of Lander Dental Group, as well as to anyone that would like to register with the practice. Lander Dental Group is also keen to offer this service to schools.
