Harold Chapman, former chairman for the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust has been tragically killed in a road traffic collision in Australia.

His wife, Pamela, who was travelling with him, was also critically injured in the incident and remains in intensive care.

The couple only moved to the country in August to enjoy their retirement with family and grandchildren.

Paula Martin, CEO for the Air Ambulance said, "We are all devastated by the news.

"He was the epitome of someone who enjoyed giving back to the community.

"When he left for Australia we all said we would miss him but now we will really miss him.

"His children and grandchildren should be very proud of what he did for the place he loved all of his working life.

"Naturally our thoughts and prayers are with his family and with Pamela Chapman."

Harold and Pamela Chapman moved to Cornwall in 1971 when he took up the post of Treasurer for the then Bude and Stratton District Council.

He went on to become Director or Finance and Chief Officer for North Cornwall District Council.

Mr Chapman retired from local government in 2002, after 31 years of service in Cornwall.

During his life Mr Chapman also held a number of significant public appointments, including serving eight years as a non-executive director of the Royal Cornwall NHS Trust.

He also had a passion for golf, and was an active member of St Enodoc Golf Club.

Mr Chapman was well known for his community work, supporting many local organisations including Bude Lifesaving Club, Padstow Lobster Hatchery, the Poor Lands Charity in Padstow and many years of fundraising with Wadebridge Rotary.

But it was his devotion to the Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust that really stood out, giving over 15 years of voluntary service on the board of trustees, most notably as chairman of the trust.

"It would be fair to say that if it were not for his determination and tenacity, his integrity and diligence, the charity may not have survived." Said Paula Martin

"My happiest memories of Harold have to be watching him escort Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall around our new air ambulance headquarters earlier this year.

"He saw it as a pinnacle moment, he was so proud, and his family treasure the photographs taken that day.

"We arranged for the fundraising wing of the building to be named after him, which took him by surprise because he didn't know we had done it."
