Animal Magic!
An annual event which sells out each Autumn, guests this year were taken on a trip through the animal kingdom from 7pm – 10pm at Hall for Cornwall.
The show involved over 300 pupils, who ranged in age from 7 years old from Truro School Prep, through to 18 years of age in the Senior School.
A variety of styles of music were celebrated with a range of instruments - from Bach to Jazz, Black Eyed Peas to Michael Jackson, blockbuster theme tunes to nursery rhymes. Many performances had an animal link and showcased the children - from groups to choirs, barbershops to soloists.
Martin Palmer, Director of Music orchestrated the event with the support of the 30 music teachers from both schools. He explains why this event is not only popular with the audiences but vital for the children taking part:
"We hold this event once a year in the biggest venue possible so that families and friends of Truro School can experience the high standard and diversity of music making in the school."
Parents of pupils attended, as well as friends, extended family and members of the local community.
Each performance was wildly different, with many exploring the animal theme. A Symphony Orchestra performed Jurassic Park, a String Orchestra performed Bach's Double Dodo Violin Concerto, a Wind Ensemble performed Mozart's Serenade for 13 Wind Instruments, Truro Prep's year 6 choir performed pop music, a Clarinet Choir performed Tchaikovsky's Dance of the Little Swans, a Saxophone Ensemble performed Mancini's Pink Panther, a senior Jazz Orchestra performed Zawinul's Birdland whilst the Junior's Jazz Orchestra performed a range of pop songs, a Saxophone Quartet performed Mancini arr Carbis' Baby Elephant Walk, Guitar Groups performed Celso Machado's Marchina de Carnival, Samba Bands performed Carnival of Samba, a Brass Ensemble performed Cruella de Ville from 101 Dalmatians, whilst a Brass Ensemble with Boys Barbershop performed Gilkyson's The Bare Necessities, and a Wind Band performed Crocodile Rock.
The evening was a huge success with the performers and audience, and a great start to the new academic year.
Truro School is Cornwall's largest coeducational independent boarding and day school, with approximately 790 pupils from 11 to 18 years of age and Truro School Prep has 243 pupils from 3 to 11 years of age. In the Senior School one in three pupils learn a musical instrument and many learn more than one.
